Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics: Don’t Count on Staying at a Hyatt Property!

We are in that spot on the calendar right now where airlines and hotels are starting to open up availability for the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics. Those travelers that use points are going to want to be ready to pounce because hotels will fill fast (if the hotels even make standard rooms available for points at all!).

Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics: Don’t Plan on Staying at a Hyatt Property

Hyatt is one hotel chain that already has the calendar opened for the Olympic timeframe next year except there is one problem – they are saying there are no rooms available.

According to Hyatt, there is a blackout in effect for all the Tokyo properties right now. They have locked up all of these properties and rooms for the travel distributors for the Olympics. This is not just award rooms but all rooms – there is not a single Hyatt room available in Tokyo for any of the Olympic dates.

To take it further, Tokyo Hyatt Fan said on Twitter that they heard that the International Olympic Committee has contracted for all the rooms at the Grand Hyatt Tokyo. If that is the case, good for the GH Tokyo but it is a disappointment that Hyatt members will not even have a chance to stay at their favorite brand of hotels during the Olympics.

Bad News for Hyatt Loyalists Going to the 2020 Summer Olympics

I am a huge Hyatt fan and I get that the Olympics are big business and that no hotel wants to let their rooms go for awards when they can command rack rates or higher. But, having elite status is a great way to really enjoy a stay for events like this – better rooms, late check-outs, free breakfasts, club access, etc. Since elite members can only get those benefits with direct bookings (or American Express Fine Hotels and Resorts), booking through something like a distributor will not even let Globalists enjoy their benefits.
