Good News: Aeroplan Allowing Free Award Cancellations

For a limited-time, Aeroplan is allowing free award cancellations. If you have any Star Alliance awards booked with them and want to change, this is a great time to do it.

Aeroplan is the frequent flyer program of Air Canada and one of the best choices for Star Alliance premium award bookings. They are a program that has both many things to like and dislike but one that I use many times for awards between the US and Europe.

For a limited time (through March 31), Aeroplan is allowing free award cancellations. This is a great move and one that US airlines have not all publicly acknowledged (though some are doing it on a case-by-case basis).

As of last year, the fee to normally cancel an award ticket with Aeroplan is $75 (CAD) down from the original $125. This is what you would pay if you were to do it online. If you were to do it over the phone, it would cost $150 per ticket (again, CAD).

Now, through March 31, you can cancel your Aeroplan award just by signing in and going to Manage My Bookings. Once there, you will see the little “cancel” button. Go ahead and cancel and you will not pay a fee to do so!

This is certainly good news, not just for those with immediate travel awards but also for those who may have rethought some future travel for whatever reason.

  • A few days too late for a friend who cancelled his Aeroplan award flights. As for other programs, they’re taking advantage of the situation and some like BA still charge their elites for cancelation and redeposit.

  • Thanks, Charlie! I just got back 77,500 without having to call them. I don’t think I got the $58.02 back but I really don’t care either. I’m just relieved. One less thing to cancel, thanks to you.

  • I just tried to cancel flights on Turkish Airlines for April 12th Boston to Thessaloniki booked through Aeroplan but there is no option to “cancel” …flight shows as unticketed…? (it was ticketed in January)
Phone call times are unbelievably long to call them…..is it because Turkish has cancelled the flight?
How can I get my points refunded if I cannot “cancel”?

    • Hi, Rhonda. That is one of my popular routes also. 🙂
That is very strange. It could be since TK has canceled those flights. Best bet is to call them right at 7AM Eastern time. I have had very little wait time when I have done that.
I have to do that on one of my reservations since it is grayed out to refund.
