The 2021 Boston Marathon Will Not Take Place in April

2017 Boston Marathon Registration

The BAA has made the annoucement many runners thought was likely – the 2021 Boston Marathon will be postponed and not take place in April.

The BAA is trying to keep on top of information for their potential 2021 Boston Marathon runners by letting them know their plans. Those plans do not yet have a date for the 2021 Boston Marathon but they have revealed that the 2021 Boston Marathon will not take place in April of 2021 – for the second year in a row, there will be an April with no Boston Marathon.

The 2021 Boston Marathon Postponed

The BAA has said that they will be postponing the 2021 Boston Marathon until at least the fall. Until the 2020 Boston Marathon had gone virtual, the 2020 postponed date had been in September. If the marathon is able to be held in September, that could be an awesome time both with the beautiful fall colors starting to come in and (hopefully) decent weather.

But, at this time, they will not make a commitment on the date since there is still too much unknown with the coronavirus situation. They have said it will be postponed until at least fall of 2021.

Registration Information – Unknown

Something else that has not been announced yet is the registration details. With almost no marathons taking place in 2020, many runners were not able to run qualifying times for the 2021 Boston Marathon. We shall see what they do and when they open registration. My guess is that the qualifying window will be closer to the final race date than normal to allow for runners to get their qualifying marathons in. Or, the BAA will just extend the previous window by a year. Still, there are a lot of runners that would like to be able to run their qualifying race but that is difficult with so few marathons taking place.

I do applaud the BAA for making this announcement so many months in advance. It is difficult to make calls like this when there is still a lot of time before the event but I believe this was the right call to make so as to not draw out the inevitable postponement until just before the race would have been set to take place. Hopefully the other major marathons will think ahead like this as well.
