Oh, the Skymall catalog! That thick package of reading material that was in every seat back on airplanes across America. It gave us so many different moments when reading it – “Who would ever buy this?!” “Why didn’t I think of this?” Why am I reading this?!” and many other thoughts. Seriously, who has looked in the Skymall catalog and not found something that looked incredibly interesting sandwiched between two of the most stupid things you have ever seen! 🙂 Strangely enough, Skymall claims that their Garden Yetis (available in three sizes, including life size for over $2,000) was one of their best-sellers!
Well, those catalogues are to be no more with the company behind Skymall filing for bankruptcy protection this week. No more looking for the most absurd gift ideas or curiosities as we waited for our cruising altitude so we could get our electronics out. Actually, since it became ok to use portable electronic items from gate to gate, I am sure the readership of the Skymall catalog went way down! I know I stopped flipping through it after that!
So, in honor of this backseat staple taking a nosedive, I am running a Kindle giveaway this weekend! Maybe you are the person that still leafed through that catalog because you didn’t have a Kindle – I don’t want you to be without reading material now that it will be gone! 🙂
So, the rules are:
- One comment per person
- Comment can be about anything, but it would be great if you could share your favorite Skymall item – please keep all comments family friendly
- The winner will be randomly selected using Random.org
- The winner must have a US address for the shipping of the Kindle
- Giveaway will run through 11:59PM tomorrow, January 25
- Have fun!
I enjoyed skymall. I even made a purchase of a,battery powered light to fit on my out door umbrella so we could see our food on hot summer evenings. Loved it
The Feline Tree House – it looks like a real tree, great for indoor cats and their owners. I would have rather spent the $799.95 on that instead of on the huge vet bill right before my only cat died.
My favorite SkyMall item was ventilated sheets — I never purchased, but it seemed a great idea in concept.
I always enjoyed seeing what I could possibly need in the SkyMall!
Flying coach a lot; that inflatable mattress that sat on your tray really looked appealing.
I liked flipping through it–it wasn’t as good as the Archie McPhee catalog, but better than staring at the back of the seat in front of me.
I loved the skymall travel pillow (aka giant blue wedge). Never even considered buying one, but always wanted to see one being used.
Always got a kick looking at the crazy stuff Skymall had in the catalog. Though never could bring myself to purchase anything. More than often just mindless flipping through the pages before landing.
Love the sky all. Shopping mile high!
I like reading the skymall catalog, shows lots of interesting innovations I was not aware of.
I only made Skymall purchases during the 25k for $500 bonus miles promo. I always did want a garden gnome for my nightstand, though.
Always though about getting that inflatable tray table pillow and flipping through the pages while still on the runway.
i would never make it through the whole catalogue because half way through, I would always think, “Why am I looking at this?”
I loved the swords …
Flipping through the Skymall magazine was part of my flying experience. There goes my 10 minutes of entertainment…
Garden gnomes!
I will really miss Sky Mall. Hours of browsing! My favorite was the suitcase that was like a skateboard. After dragging my suitcase for hours because of flight delays, I could imagine myself zipping around.
This giveaway would be great to go with discount on Amazon Prime today.
I have never purchased anything from Sky Miles catalogue but enjoyed looking through it.
Sky Mall was great entertainment, seeing stuff you never knew existed.
And to think that JC Penney is bringing back the catalog. There is a radio PSA on not living paycheck to paycheck. So it’s not wise to buy the miniature suit of armor from the in-flight magazine.
Never got to use it…
How come the yetis are one of the bestsellers but no one has ever seen one?
Buy your Yeti now.
I am really going to miss flipping through the Skymall magazine. It was always very entertaining.
RIP skymall
Let me give this a try…
I still use my shoe storage units–white cabinets with little boxes for shoes.
I always wanted the lifesize garden yeti. But not for the price they were asking.
I think my favorite is the trainer to teach your cat to use the toilet. That cat in the photo always scared me!
The bug vacuum for my sister
I looked the SM mag over on lots of flights, but never bought anything,
I liked the goofy looking “exercise” equipment. It looked like the least effective, most expensive stuff available.
I’m just commenting cause I want a kindle. Skymall never made sense to me such a niche market it’s amazing they lasted this long. Someone should make a catalog for toilets… Toilet toiletries… “Not everyone flies but everyone goes”
I bought a monthly bill pay organizer from them -still use it. I looked like this: http://franklinplanner.fcorgp.com/store/buy/Search-4/Monthly-Bill-Invoice-Organizer-with-Drawer-/prod820158/;jsessionid=4B32632C1BACB0DFCC6506B7DEBC94EF R.I.P. skymall.
End of an era…
The monster crawling out of the grave figure for my garden…
fun too look through on long flights
SkyMall was cool, but they had too much weird stuff. I bet some people bought those, but maybe that’s not enough to hold the business running.
Never bought anything but liked looking!
Never made a purchase, but always enjoyed looking through the intresting assortment of SkyMall items on the plane.
My wife actually ordered smth once and it almost felt like they were surprise to get an order. they were out of stock of smth and it took months for the item to arrive.
My favorite was….the catalog! Fun way to kill 5-20 minutes before falling asleep on takeoff 🙂
The globe bar, by far.
Skymall was a great way to pass some time on the tarmac.
I wish I had a favorite Skymall item but I haven’t looked at one of the catalogues in so long! Didn’t they used to sell buckwheat filled pillows?
I love the Nettlestone Library Ensemble at Skymall.
Never actually bought anything from Skymall before but I loved leafing through it.
Sad to see it go though 🙁
We always enjoyed looking through SkyMall on flights and imagining what you would ever do with some of the random things in there! Some of them seemed so specific that it made them random!
Loved being entertained by the wacky items in Skymall.
Go to YouTube and look up Skymall kitties 🙂
Just like you said, I only read the SkyMall because I didn’t have a Kindle!
Sky Mall — end of an error
the garden zombie lol
I’ve tried really hard to buy something out of the Skymall catalog because I was bored – failed.
It would be a nice gift for my wife… 🙂
Ah… Skymall rules! I read somewhere talk about it a bit like a cult and I agree. It did have a cult-like status for those of us who took (often secret) pleasure in both perusing it on the plane and after the flight taking it home for more careful reading 🙂 . One of my favorite things to read and look over again and again were-are the $5,000+ “shiatsu massage chairs.”
I always wondered who bought their products. Or if.
The hot dog toaster gave me the giggles.
I haven’t seen a skymall catalog in years.I remember they had some interesting stuff in there.
Kindle of course
I like Skymall catalogs. I would look at them during take off or landing when we could not have the laptop out. I always liked the personalized map with the pins showing where you have been, where you are going next and where you want to go. There was always something in there that you could not imagine anyone wanting to buy, but also items that you thought were interesting.
Oh my goodness. I can’t believe it’s going away! I always read it, and I had so many great “favorites” especially the pink mosquito netting with radio from years ago. Thank you for the wonderful giveaway.

Liked the money counting machine that could count up to 6000 bills, like who would use that?
Just reading the SkyMall catalog itself is great entertainment!
I would love to try it! Thanks
I don’t think I’ve ever owned anything from Skymall, or even browsed it on a plane, but I always enjoyed seeing their items pop up in humor articles on the internet.
I can’t possibly pick just one item. At least 75% of the items in there I would love to have and 50% of those I think I have to have!
Seriously, the rotating tie racks were genius.
No favorite item – just always wondered if in-air boredom created the majority of sales from SkyMall…
I find the selfie stick to be one of the more humorous items that I’ve seen in Skymall.
I got a kick out of all the weird and interesting pet stuff they would have!
I always wanted a mathematical expressions clock!
Never ordered anything — wouldn’t mind my own drone, though.
I always thought the projection clock looked cool.
Not the posture harness, I can tell you that!
I can’t decide between the Zen Yoga frog, and the Dancing Ducks welcome sculpture.
There were so many awesome things!
Hands down, the t-shirts are the best. Dry, wry humor. I can’t say that I’d wear all of them or most for that matter, but I sure would like to wear some of them if even for only a single occasion. A great in flight diversion that’s always sure to bring a smile.
