Get ready to sign-up for the 2020 NYC virtual marathon! If you are fast on the registration, you may even get a guaranteed entry into a future NYC Marathon!

In just a little while (or possibly already, depending on when you read this), the NYC Marathon will open up the registration for their 2020 virtual marathon. While running a virtual marathon is definitely a 2020 thing to do, the NYC Marathon is making it a bit more interesting for some runners.

There are a few different options available for registering for the NYC virtual marathon – everything from free to $150. What you get with the paid options can be quite good, however.

Run for Free

Of course, you can run no matter what and never need to pay – right? Well, this way, if you register, you will still get a couple of things out of it. Here is what the free registration will give you:

  • Entry: Free
  • Capacity: Unlimited

Registrants receive:

Finishers receive:

Of course, the NYC Marathon is a big event with big sponsors so why not give away a discount on a new Volvo! 🙂

Get a Medal When You Finish

  • Entry: $50 NYRR members | $60 non-members
  • Capacity: Unlimited

Registrants receive:

Finishers Receive:

This is the one the majority of registrants will choose – because you get a NYC Marathon medal! While $60 (for non-members) may sound pricey, this is still a pretty cool way to get a NYC Marathon medal for running 26.2 miles wherever you are!

Run to Fundraise for NYRR Team for Kids

Funds raised by NYRR Team for Kids members support Rising New York Road Runners and NYRR Run for the Future. Through school-and community-based programs, youth events, and a collection of digital resources, New York Road Runners brings free running and fitness programs to students across the country.

  • Entry: $150 NYRR members | $175 non-members
  • Additional requirements: Fundraise $500
  • Capacity: 200 (First come, first served)

Registrants receive:

Finishers receive:

  • Guaranteed, non-complimentary entry for a future marathon*
  • Finisher medal
  • Marathon branded running buff
  • Access to special TCS New York City Marathon programming
  • A discount on a purchase or a lease of a brand new Volvo
  • Strava digital finisher badge

Run to Gain Guaranteed Entry

  • Entry: $150 NYRR members | $175 non-members
  • Capacity: 1,000 (First come, first served)

Registrants receive:

Finishers receive:

  • Guaranteed, non-complimentary entry for a future marathon*
  • Finisher medal
  • Marathon branded running buff
  • Access to special TCS New York City Marathon programming
  • A discount on a purchase or a lease of a brand new Volvo
  • Strava digital finisher badge

This one is going to be the most popular and it is a brilliant move by NYC Marathon organizers. With this, you get a guaranteed entry into the otherwise-lottery-based NYC Marathon for your choice of 2021, 2022, or 2023. Of course, you will still be paying the fee for that year but you know you will get in.

The reason this is smart by the organizers is they are offering you this guaranteed entry at a $100 markup – and you will still pay the steep NYC Marathon fee when it comes around again. But, if you want a guaranteed entry, this is the way to go.

Bottom Line

The NYC Marathon website is already getting slammed so if you are interested in getting a guaranteed entry, be on their website a few minutes before noon today!

For everyone else, the medal-only option is unlimited registrants so you don’t need to worry about rushing for it.
