With many people restricted from normal activities or events (such as running races), it can always be helpful to find something to shoot for as a goal. The more interesting, the better – for some people! If that is you, you may want to consider giving the Goggins 4 x 4 x 48 Challenge a try!
What is the Goggins 4 x 4 x 48 Challenge?

First off, David Goggins (who I wrote about a while ago) is an amazing human being that has truly pushed the natural limits of what people consider possible. He is a Navy SEAL who also passed other difficult special force training programs as well – as if being a SEAL is not intense enough! He has done some amazing ultra endurance events and is definitely not one to take excuses for someone not being able to do something!
To help inspire people to be active more and to push themselves past their own preconceived limits, he has the 4 x 4 x 48 challenge. He started it last year and it was such a big hit that he is doing it again this year.
What is the 4 x 4 x 48 Challenge and What Makes it Challenging?
For 48 hours, you will run 4 miles every 4 hours. That’s it! At the end, you will have run 48 miles in 48 hours. On the surface, that sounds pretty easy, right? I have run 48 miles in under 10 hours straight so 48 hours should be simple – or, not?
The difficulty in this is truly the fact that you are doing it every 4 hours, around the clock. For example, you have to run at midnight – likely taking from 30 – 55 minutes – and then go to sleep before heading out the door again at 4am to do it all over again!
When and How?
It will begin at 8PM PST on March 5 and continue through 8PM PST on March 7. Figure out your own start time in your time zone based on that as all runners will be starting at the same time.
If you are not a runner, he is encouraging you to exercise – in some fashion or another – for 45-60 minutes every 4 hour leg. This way, everyone can participate, even if you are not a runner.
There is no cost to enter and David is giving away some prizes as well as encouraging all participants to raise money for their favorite charity as they take on this challenge. It certainly is a challenge and already has thousands of people amped up and ready to give it their best.
Bottom Line
During times like this, it is great to have various things to motivate you to stay moving and healthy. Also, it can be mentally helpful to approach a challenge that really pushes you beyond what you think is possible. This 4 x 4 x 48 Challenge is one such challenge!
I have a conflict (as of right now) on that weekend but if it clears up, I definitely want to do it as well! Even if I cannot, I may do it another time – that is what many people do on dates that work better for them. This way, you really wouldn’t have an excuse – me, either. 🙂
