Finally! 140,000 Amex Points – For Upgrading to Amex Business Platinum [Targeted]

Written by Charlie

This huge 140,000 Amex point offer for upgrading to the Amex Business Platinum card is targeted – and I was finally targeted! Check to see if you are also!

For a while now, I have been seeing people get these targeted offers for upgrading their American Express cards and each time, I come up with nothing. Until this week! Logging in to my account, I saw a nice big 140,000 American Express Membership Reward points just for upgrading!

Upgrade Offer for Amex Platinum Business – 140,000 Points

Thanks to American Express’ public “once-per-lifetime” language for their card offers, we are all done with sign-up bonuses with Amex – for a while! But, upgrade offers are really great because they let you get cards you already had in the past – and get the upgrade bonus to go with it.

In the past, it was possible to upgrade, downgrade, upgrade (and again and again) the Hilton cards and keep getting big bonuses. And I did that! Until it was dead. 🙁 But, this is likely the best upgrade offer I have ever had – getting 140,000 Amex Membership Reward points for upgrading to the American Express Business Platinum!

The American Express Business Platinum is a card I have not had for a few years, thanks to its annual fee (currently $695) and not getting much value out of it year after year. But, it has some great things to get with it, things like using Amex points through Amex Travel and getting a 35% rebate on the points used, Centurion Lounge access, the $200 annual credit for airline incidentals, etc.

I saw Frequent Miler post about this upgrade offer last month – and was not targeted for it. I didn’t really think about it again until I logged in to my American Express account this week and saw this wonderful message:

This current upgrade offer is currently available until January 31, 2023, so you have time to be targeted still! The absolute best time to get the card would be around the end of December – because then you could get the $200 airline incidental credit in December of 2022, next year, and in early January 2024, all before having to pay the second annual fee.

For us, though, with some large purchases upcoming, it made more sense to snag the upgrade now. Also, I didn’t want it to disappear. 🙂

To get the 140,000 Amex points, you need to spend $10,000 in 3 months. Also, you will be charged a prorated annual fee, based on when your Amex Business Gold is due for its annual fee. Remember, this annual fee does not count for your spending.

So, by the end of the year, we will get to have another 140,000 Membership Reward points in our account! Fit timing, too, since we depleted our account by booking our 7 business class tickets between Europe and the US.

An interesting thing is that the public offer for the American Express Business Platinum is only 120,000 points and has a $695 annual fee. For upgrading to this card, I get 140,000 points and only pay $595 annual fee!

Have you been targeted for this offer? Were you previously not targeted and now are targeted?

  • Maybe this is a stupid question, but when you get the upgrade offer does that mean your biz gold will become a biz plat or you are adding a biz plat so you will have both cards?

    • Not stupid at all! Your biz gold becomes a biz platinum. So you get that card in the mail and all it’s benefits but your card number stays the same. Also, you pay a prorated fee based on when your annual fee is due (so the biz gold for us was $295 and the platinum is $595 – we will pay something less than that, likely $120 based on when our renewal is).
