If you want to drive east, check out this great deal from Hertz for one way rentals starting at $9.99 (or less). This is a nice way to take your time and see some sights along the way!

While it is common to see deals for rental cars from Florida to the northern US or Arizona to the West Coast during spring and the opposite during the fall, it is less common to see deals for driving cross country. But, these are still strange travel times so here we go!

Here’s the deal. Hertz needs to get some cars away from the West Coast and they will give you a discount to help get those cars further to the east. Here is what you need to know.

This works if you pick up a car from any of the following origination points:

  • Los Angeles
  • Las Vegas
  • San Diego
  • Sacramento
  • San Francisco
  • Oakland
  • Fresno
  • Seattle
  • Portland
  • (and the surrounding areas)

It does not have to be just an airport location – any of the surrounding areas of those cities will work.

To get the special $9.99 rate, you will need to drop the car off in one of the destination points:

  • Florida
  • Georgia
  • Illinois
  • Indiana
  • Louisiana
  • North Carolina
  • South Carolina
  • Texas
  • Washington, DC

As you can see, there are a ton of options for starting and ending! In fact, you do not even have to travel that far east with Indiana and Illinois and Texas giving you some semi-halfway options.

But, you cannot just take your very slow, sweet time making the journey. The max trip amount allowed is 10 days with somehow 1 day being the minimum. Yes, the minimum time would be 10 hours for San Diego to Texas but you are not going to be driving to many of these other destinations within 1 day! 🙂

Here are the exact details on when to rent and for how long:

  • Valid for pick-up through 1/31/2021
  • 1 day minimum, 10 day maximum

The Deal in Real Life

Depending on where you choose to rent from will determine the exact kinds of vehicles and price points. Obviously, the $9.99 price is for the cheapest and smallest of vehicles and it goes up from there (like $12.99) with the really nice vehicles not even included in the pricing tier for this deal.

But, I did find some Manager’s Specials as options as low as $8.99. This is where they will give you whatever 2 or 4 door cars they have in abundance.

Bottom Line

Hertz is offering cars at $9.99 per day (or less) for travel from most of the West Coast to states heading East. If you want to hit the road for a little travel, this can make it a bit more economical. But, you will need to act quickly as you have just 11 more days to actually pickup the rental car.
