While earning miles or points with a revenue system surely isn’t fun for those of us who like to travel on the cheap, it can be a great thing to combine a bonus with a sale. And that is what Southwest has done with their new program bonus to draw in travelers.
Southwest Summer Sale + Double Points = Bigger Earnings
While many places are still in modified lockdowns, there are many more people that are getting ready to hit the roads or the air once again. The good/bad of that is debate for another post but the data is showing that more people are traveling domestically now than they had over the last month.
Southwest is trying to be the airline those travelers turn to this summer with a rare summer sale combined with a double point bonus. Here are the details on this (check out the summer sale post here).
How to Earn 2X Southwest Points
- Register using this link to get started
- Fly between May 12 and August 31
- Earn 2x points on your travel during that timeframe
That’s it! This is one good thing about revenue-based programs – they can be pretty easy to follow. Just make sure you register before you book your ticket!
How it Stacks Up
So, if you were to jump on one of the $49 fares that are available all over the US, you would earn 234 points on a Wanna Get Away fare. Double that and you are earning 468 points that can be redeemed for around $7 worth of airfare on a future award ticket. Not bad at all!
Plus, you can use a credit card that earns extra points for travel and you can maximize that even more. Or, purchase a gift card on sale (or at a grocery store with a card that is earning bonus points right now) and save even more!
With this promotion, I would avoid paying for any ticket on Southwest with points and just pay for it to get the extra points. In fact, that could very well be why Southwest is offering this promo – so, well played, Southwest. Well played.
If you are curious about safety measures, airlines and airports are making big changes in how they stay clean and sanitary so keep that in mind.
