Something big that American Express has going for it when in comparison to Chase and their Ultimate Reward program is the occasional transfer bonuses that they offer. To date, Chase has never offered a transfer bonus for their various hotel and airline partners. American Express has been a little more stingy with them as of late, but today they launched another transfer bonus – this one to British Airways and their Avios program.
35% Transfer Bonus – Membership Rewards to British Airways
Now through June 7, when you transfer your American Express Membership Reward points to British Airways, you will receive a 35% bonus. This is already coded in so you do not need to do anything but initiate the transfer. If you transfer 10,000 Membership Reward points, you will receive 13,500 Avios. Avios is a distance-based program so Avios are not best for long-haul trips (for most people). They are VERY good for short-haul and award travel to South America. Points post instantly to your British Airways account.
For instance, short-haul, one-way tickets can be booked on American Airlines using Avios and you do not need to pay the close-in booking fee ($75 for award bookings within 21 days). It would take 12,500 AA miles vs 4,500 Avios. Below is a sample illustrating this great deal:
Make the transfer
To get these extra Avios, here are the steps to follow:
- Go to the Membership Rewards site
- Use the drop-down menu under Use Points to select Airlines
- Select British Airways Avios
- Select to Link account or Enroll account if you do not have a British Airways account
- Select how many Avios you would like and initiate the transfer
- That is it!
If you need some more Membership Reward points, there is a good, limited-time offer with the American Express Business Gold Rewards card – 50,000 Membership Reward points. (I receive a commission if you use this link)
