The Marine Corps Marathon is a very popular event that takes place in and around our nation’s capitol. It is so popular that they had instituted a lottery (similar to other marathons like Chicago and NYC) for deciding who will get to run. However, this year, they are opening up registration early and for just one day – no lottery – to all US Marine Corps members!

My best friend growing up is a Marine and I have heard it over and over again from him and many others – there is no such thing as a ex-Marine! 🙂 Well, that definitely is true for the registration today as well as all Marines – whether active, retired, reserve, or former – are invited to register for the 45th running of the Marine Corps Marathon.
This year, the Marine Corps Marathon is on October 25. Not only is it the 45th edition, this year also marks the 75th anniversary of the Marines landing on Iwo Jima. In fact, that anniversary date is today and that is why this special one-day registration is open.
As another part of the anniversary, the finisher medal this year “will feature the island’s volcanic ash, often referred to as black sand.” And the Marine Corps Marathon is not done there either! They will also be commemorating the 45th edition of the marathon by reducing the registration fee by 4.5% from the 2019 marathon cost. That’s right, a marathon fee that is actually dropping a little. In addition, Marines also get their military discount today on top of that drop in price.
This special one-day registration period is also open to the families of Marines. So, if you are in this special group of people, make sure you sign-up today to know that you have a place at the starting line on October 25th!
If you are not a Marine or family member and would still like to make sure you have a place, there are other programs you can avail yourself to to skip the lottery:
