The 2021 Boston Marathon race date has been decided and it will be a fall Boston Marathon! This means a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see this course in fall colors!

After a long wait, the date for the 2021 Boston Marathon has been announced. For the second year in a row, the Patriot’s Day in April will pass without the Boston Marathon taking place. Instead, the 2021 Boston Marathon is slated to take place in the fall of 2021.

The new date is Monday, October 11 for the 2021 Boston Marathon. This is based on the reopening plan for Massachusetts so it could still face some movement if authorities determine that this date is no longer safe for the communities and runners. But, as for now, this is the date.

When Will Registration Take Place?

The registration period has not yet been opened and that will be announced sometime in the near future. It is expected that the registration period will open in mid-late March. This does mean that the eligibility period will extend from September 15, 2018 right up until the registration period. It means that, if you can find an official marathon someplace before then, you could still qualify for this year’s Boston Marathon. As to whether you will actually be able to get in, that is another question.

Another expectation is that the field will be shrunk from the typical field to accommodate for distancing and other health protocols that will be in place. This means that it could be harder than ever to get in since merely qualifying does not guarantee entrance (since it will be based on the faster times in each category).

However, the wild card is how many people may actually try to register. Sure, this is a fantastic opportunity to enjoy the historic Boston Marathon route in all of its fall glory but there will still be many that may not want to travel or may not want to sign-up, not knowing what the summer may bring with closures, flight cancelations, etc.
