It has been over a year since the last federal stimulus checks have gone out and states have been stepping in to send out their own. New York State is doing this as well for home owners this month – with a political message attached.
New Stimulus Checks Up to $1,050 Are Going Out to NYS Homeowners

With rising gas prices and the price of goods going up as well, many states and local governments have been sending out checks to people. For New York State homeowners, around 3 million, there will be a check in the mail this month that will be up to $1,050.
For homeowners in the NYC area, the average will be $425. For those that own homes outside of New York City, it will be much higher with an average of $970 per homeowner and as much as $1,050.
Of course, there are some eligibility limitations. To be eligible for this one-time tax rebate credit, you must have:
- qualified for a 2022 STAR credit or exemption,
- had income that was less than or equal to $250,000 for the 2020 income tax year, and
- a school tax liability for the 2022-2023 school year that is more than your 2022 STAR benefit.
In case you look at that and wonder if that means you are eligible or not, NYS says “You do not need to calculate your income to receive the homeowner tax rebate credit. We will calculate income for eligibility purposes, and we will issue the credit based on that determination.”
The amount of your rebate credit will depend on:
- where your home is located,
- how much your income is, and
- whether you receive Enhanced STAR or Basic STAR.

Checks have already started going out and there is a political message attached to them. Early check receivers say that it says “Gov. Hochul and the New York State Legislature are providing you this.” The checks are to all go out before June 28, which, coincidentally, is the primary date for the Democratic Party for governor of NYS. I believe, technically, that a “rebate” is “a partial refund to someone who has paid too much for tax, rent, or a utility.” I guess that would mean that you would be providing it for yourself, if this is truly a rebate.
The rebate is coming as a check so keep an eye on your mailbox. Unlike with the federal stimulus checks that went out before, this NYS stimulus rebate credit says that their contact center cannot provide you with a specific timeframe but that you should receive it before your school tax bill is due.
More states are taking similar actions with Maine and New Mexico doing this as well.
