‘Tis the season for deals – and a lot of miles! In an effort to get your business for online shopping, shopping portals are doling out some nice mileage bonuses so you can make out pretty well if you take advantage of them!
Earn Up to 12,000 Bonus Miles With New Shopping Bonuses
Here are the 3 airlines that are currently offering these tiered shopping bonuses. Nothing excludes you from taking advantage of all three, it just depends on how much you will spend online.
American Airlines Shopping Bonus – Up to 4,000 Miles
Link: AA Shopping Bonus
- Shopping promo runs from 10/30/17 through 11/19/17 at 11:59:59 pm ET
- Earn a one-time bonus of up to 4,000 AAdvantage® miles on qualifying purchases, in addition to the standard AAdvantage® miles earned from shopping online through the AAdvantage eShoppingSM mall.
- This one-time bonus award will be determined using one of the following tiers, based on cumulative qualifying purchases made during the Bonus Period:
- Tier 1 bonus: 500 miles for qualifying purchases of at least $150
- Tier 2 bonus: 2,000 miles for qualifying purchases of at least $600
- Tier 3 bonus: 4,000 miles for qualifying purchases of $1,200 or more.
- “Qualifying purchases” do not include returns, cancellations, shipping and handling, taxes, gift card or other cash equivalent purchases, and certain products that are not eligible for bonus miles
To hit the full 4,000 mile bonus, you will need to spend $1,200. Do not forget that you will also earn miles based on that spending as well. So, if you are earning an average of 2 miles per dollar (conservative guess), you will wind up with 6,400 AA miles for $1,200 in spending – 5.3 miles per dollar.
Southwest Shopping Bonus – Up to 3,000 Points

- Shopping promo runs from October 30, 2017 through November 20, 2017 at 11:59 p.m. ET
- Earn a one-time bonus of up to 3,000 bonus points on qualifying purchases, in addition to the standard points earned from shopping online through Rapid Rewards Shopping®.
- This one-time bonus award will be determined using one of the following tiers, based on cumulative qualifying purchases made during the Bonus Period:
- Tier 1 bonus: 500 bonus points for qualifying purchases of at least $150 – $499.99
- Tier 2 bonus: 1,000 bonus points for qualifying purchases of at least $500 – $999.99
- Tier 3 bonus: 3,000 bonus points for qualifying purchases of $1,000 or more
- “Qualifying purchases” do not include returns, cancellations, shipping and handling, taxes, gift card or other cash equivalent purchases, and certain products that are not eligible for bonus points
For the Southwest bonus, the spending is less for the top tier but the bonus is less as well. However, you will be earning slightly more per dollar with the bonus than the AA promo gives you (Southwest is 3.3 points per dollar for the full amount while AA is 3 miles per dollar).
United Airlines Shopping Bonus – Up to 5,000 Miles
Link: United Shopping Bonus
- Shopping promo runs from 10/30/17 through 11/19/17 at 11:59:59 pm ET
- Earn a one-time bonus of up to 5,000 MileagePlus® bonus award miles on qualifying purchases, in addition to the standard MileagePlus® miles earned from shopping online through the MileagePlus® Shopping mall.
- This one-time bonus award will be determined using one of the following tiers, based on cumulative qualifying purchases made during the Bonus Period:
- Tier 1 bonus: 500 miles for qualifying purchases of at least $150
- Tier 2 bonus: 2,500 miles for qualifying purchases of at least $750
- Tier 3 bonus: 5,000 miles for qualifying purchases of $1,500 or more
- “Qualifying purchases” do not include returns, cancellations, shipping and handling, taxes, gift card or other cash equivalent purchases, and certain products that are not eligible for bonus miles
The United portal bonus is the largest of the 3 with 5,000 bonus miles available. It is at the same rate as AA with 3 bonus miles per dollar if you hit the $1,500 in spending.
Takeaway
It is good to see these bonuses roll out! While you certainly do not need to spend $3,700 during this bonus period, it can be quite a tidy some of miles if you do. It all depends on what your shopping needs/patterns are.
Just remember – all the above bonuses end before Thanksgiving. That means you will not be able to take advantage of special pricing during all of those sales. But, if you buy something and find it cheaper during the sales, you can always return it – though you will lose the miles from this promo.
Isn’t 5+4+3=12?
I meant the title should be 12000 bonus miles not 13000
Yep, you are right. I first thought the SW was 4,000. Just came to change it when it hit me! 🙂
