The Sony WH-1000XM3 noise cancelling headphones are just great. They are my favorite noise cancelling headphones, beating out even the popular Bose Quietcomfort 35 II cans. Now, it appears the update to the great Sony headphones could be very near with these latest leaks.
The Sony WH-1000XM4 – The Next Step in Noise Cancelling Excellence
While I loved my XM3 headphones, there were a couple of things that I thought could be better. One of them was the way they would feel when around my neck (like when I was not actually having them on my head). Another was the touch panel. It could get a bit finicky.
One final thing was that you could only be connected to one device at a time (you would have to disconnect from one before connecting to another instead of the Bose way of just connecting to a device by clicking on the headphones under bluetooth).
But, most of the rest was just great, including the level of noise cancellation, the battery life, and the smartphone app that worked just so well.
The Sony WH-1000XM4 Price
Well, the new XM4 headphones look like they will be hitting the market at the same introduction price as the XM3 – $349. This is according to leaks on both the Walmart and Best Buy websites.
The price may be tough for some to swallow since you can routinely buy the WH-1000XM3 refurbished for $179. Even new ones can be had for $219 from gray market sellers (ie, no Sony warranty coverage). But, the brand new Bose headphones, the Bose 700, retail for $399 so these will come in under that.
The New Sony WH-1000XM4 Features
One of the features I like already is the ability to connect to two devices. That is huge for anyone that has a tablet/laptop and smartphone. Another one is that it appears they have worked on the design so it may sit more comfortably on the head and fit better on the ears.
They have also replaced the ambient button with a “custom” button which could be a nice way to let the user assign his/her favorite uses. The Sony app is very good with the level of customization it provides so this button customization could be a big help.
According to this site, the chip that is being used could offer up to an extra 10 hours of battery life over the previous model. The WH-1000XM3 already had some great battery life so this would be excellent!
As for everything else, they look quite similar but the small design changes could make it that much better. Here are some more photos from the Best Buy page before they had pulled it down.
When Will the Sony WH-1000XM4 Headphones Launch?
That is anyone’s guess! The good news is that this leak happened at two different retailers, the information is already in the system and it should be here before too long. My guess is that they will be announced next Tuesday, May 5. I could be wrong but let’s see!
