While normal Southwest sales are just a sale price, Southwest is doing a discount on regular priced travel. This 40% discount works on cash or reward tickets the same and the 40% comes off the base fare, not government taxes and fees. In the US, those fees don’t amount to much but they do for any foreign travel.
One more thing – Southwest sales that this is valid for travel on “select flights.” There are no details on which flights it does not apply other than to say that it may “vary by destination, flight, and day of week.” Most likely, they are just protecting themselves a bit since the discount does work on all fares (not just Wanna Get Away) and there are for sure some routes that Southwest is making so much money on already that they don’t want the discount to work on those.
