I first wrote about this latest Aeroplan transfer bonus last month. We have seen transfer bonuses up to 40% so this is not as high as it gets but it is certainly a good one if you want to book some award travel with Aeroplan. While Marriott is normally the best hotel points to transfer in, there can be some other deals that may be worthwhile as well (like the 100% bonus I took advantage of with Radisson).

Aeroplan Transfer Bonus Details:

  • Bonus Aeroplan Miles may take up to 4-6 weeks to be credited after the promotional offer end date of December 3rd, 2018.
  • The total amount of miles received from the conversion of hotel loyalty program points into Aeroplan miles must be greater than or equal to 5,000 Aeroplan Miles in order to be eligible to receive the 30% bonus.

Aeroplan is offering a boost of 30% on the points transferred over. This works with the following hotel programs:

  • SPG
  • Marriott
  • Hilton
  • Club Carlson
  • Best Western
  • Wyndham Rewards
  • COAST Hotels
  • Choice Hotels
  • Le Club Accor Hotels
  • Shrangi-La Hotels
  • Radisson
Good Deal?

While Aeroplan does charge carrier surcharges for Lufthansa, Austrian and (a smaller amount) Turkish, you won’t pay any for SAS, Lot, United, or Swiss. Plus, if you really want to go for Lufthansa First Class, you will pay much less in surcharges when you fly FROM Europe – as you can see in this post.

This Time, There’s a Twist with Marriott Packages

In the past, the best way to maximize this was to transfer points from a flight and hotel package (like with SPG or Marriott) to Aeroplan. This would allow you to get some great value out of those points. Last year, however, Aeroplan inserted this language in their deal: This offer is not applicable to Hotel+Air package redemptions offered by Marriott Rewards and Starwood Preferred Guest.

This was a bummer but I noticed it was gone this time and replaced with this language – Please note that some hotel loyalty programs have hotel and flight redemption packages where Aeroplan Miles are issued. It is at the discretion of each Hotel Program if these miles are deemed a conversion of points to miles or simply a bonus earned for the redemption. In other words, Aeroplan is putting it on Marriott to decide if they want to allow those points transferred over from packages to be eligible for the bonus.

So, heading over to Marriott, we see this language – Travel Packages are excluded from airline partner conversion bonus campaigns. There you have it! Aeroplan is no longer the bad guy in this and makes it clear that this is Marriott’s decision. Big disappointment since these were great ways to capitalize on these bonuses.

However, transferring 60,000 Marriott points for 32,500 Aeroplan miles with this promotion is still not a bad deal!
