A Better American Express Platinum Offer

I honestly did not plan to have this many American Express posts this week! In fact, when I was an affiliate with American Express I did not even have this many posts about American Express in a couple of weeks!

But, that is what happens when there are news and offers from an issuer! In this case, this American Express Platinum offer is not a new offer, but one that should be looked at in light of the current 40,000 Membership Reward . It is always best to have options and American Express does a nice job of giving that to us. 🙂

American Express Platinum Card (Mercedes Benz) – 50,000 MR points – application link (I do not get a commission for this card)

The current, best offer for the American Express Platinum card is a co-branded card – the American Express Platinum Mercedes Benz. This particular version of the American Express Platinum offers 50,000 Membership Reward points after spending $3,000 in 3 months. Other than the extra 10,000 points, the only differences between this card and the regular American Express Platinum card are: $475 annual fee (instead of $450), $1,000 (after spending $5,000 in a year) in certificates towards the future purchase or lease of a new Mercedes Benz, and up to 2,000 excess miles waived at lease-end through Mercedes Benz Financial Services. I realize most people will not be taking advantage of the Mercedes Benz options, but the extra 10,000 points is huge. Yes, the annual fee is $25 more, but that is nothing for the extra points. Of course, you will also receive the annual $200 airline reimbursement as well as the Global Entry reimbursement.

Should You Do It?

American Express PlatinumAs I wrote yesterday, American Express is in the process of no longer giving bonuses to customers who have already received one for that card. In the past, everyone had no problem getting the American Express Platinum Mercedes Benz, even when they had already had the regular Platinum card. However, there have been recent reports that customers had to wait the same amount of time between applications and closures that the regular Platinum card required. Now, the application has the same words as the regular Platinum card offer – Welcome bonus offer not available to applicants who have or have had a Platinum Card® account enrolled in the Membership Rewards® program. If you have had an American Express Platinum card in the past (consumer, not business), you very well may not receive the bonus. Just know that going in. If you would like an American Express Platinum card without the annual fee for the first year, check out this post.
