Time For Big Sales With Sports Authority Closures

Sports Authority closures
Written by Charlie

Sports Authority closures of 140 stores started this week as they announced that they had filed for Chapter 11 protection. Here is a list of the stores and what to expect.

Sports Authority sent out an e-mail this week to their customers informing them that they were filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. They also said in the e-mail that within 3 months, they would be closing or selling 140 stores across the US.

Time For Big Sales With Sports Authority Closures

Following a couple of days later, I got an e-mail from a Sports Authority that was near where my address had been last time I shopped with them. It was to inform customers that they were having a sale of an additional 5-30% off everything in their store.

Sales And What To Expect

Sales have started at 140 stores across the US.

Gift Cards & Returns

Here is what the CEO said to expect going forward with returns, gift cards, the loyalty program, and the SA credit accounts:

  • We do not expect there to be any impact on gift card balances or your ability to use gift cards at our stores or online at this time.
  • In addition, there should be no changes to our return/exchange policies at our go-forward stores or our customer loyalty program, The League.
  • If you have a warranty on a product you bought at Sports Authority, it is still in effect for the same period of time.
  • Finally, this should have no impact on the way you use your Sports Authority credit card or pay your bill.

Now, having shopped at a lot of these types of closure events before, the 5% is going to be the things with the slimmest of profit margins. It will include things like GPS watches (likely) as well as other sports electronics. But, as the time nears for the store to close, it will increase the deals that are already offered.

Clothing & Gear

Right now, you could get a great deal on sports apparel and other gear and as it continues, you will find even more deals. I remember when one sporting goods store closed near me years ago, the final days had some incredible deals on gear. There were racks and tables full of expensive cleats marked 90% off (got some great deals!) as well as some very good quality bats also marked 90% off. Of course, if you are a left-handed golfer, you stand to do very well as it seems like those clubs are some of the last to go as well.

Summary

I really hope that the employees at these locations are able to find new jobs and that this happens as smoothly as possible for them. Having shopped at many closures before and having talked with the employees, I know it can be very hard on them. It is especially hard right now because they are still working at a job that they know they will lose and it can be really difficult to have a customer service position in that situation.

So, as you go and shop for these deals, remember to be as polite and courteous with the employees as possible. It is certainly not easy for them. At the same time, I hope you are able to enjoy some great discounts and sales from these closures.
