Let me begin by saying that you get a much better value for your Southwest points by redeeming for travel on Southwest – about 1.6 cents per point. But, if you absolutely wanted to use them for something else beside Southwest travel, you can redeem them at a (slight) discount for any one of 25 gift cards from a variety of travel providers – including places like Avis, National, Hertz, Hyatt, Fairmont, etc.
This discounted sale on gift cards is available through March 31 and the on sale gift cards can be found here. This is not as good as a sale they ran a couple of years ago that gave a 20% discount on gift cards like Amazon!
Here are the places that gift cards are available and at what price:
- National Car – $50 for 4,650 points
- Avis Rental – $50 for 4,650 points
- Budget Rental – $50 for 4,650 points
- Hertz Rental – $50 for 4,700 points
- Macys – $50 for 4,700 points
- Fairway Rewards Golf – $50 for 4,700 points
- Zappos – $50 for 4,700 points
- Avis – $100 for 9,300 points
- Budget – $100 for 9,300 points
- National – $100 for 9,300 points
- Hertz – $100 for 9,400 points
- Royal Caribbean – $100 for 9,400 points
- Carnival Cruise – $100 for 9,400 points
- Bedandbreakfast.com – $100 for 9,400 points
- Spa & Wellness – $100 for 9,400 points
- Best Western – $100 for 9,400 points
- Macys – $100 for 9,400 points
- Fairmont Hotels – $100 for 9,400 points
- Hyatt (off a 2 night stay) – $100 for 9,800 points
- Carnival Cruise – $500 for 47,000 points
- Royal Caribbean – $500 for 47,000 points
Again, you will receive better value with travel on Southwest but it is really nice to have options such as this. If you normally redeem your Southwest points for gift cards, now you can save a little bit on some of them. Nothing like getting a discount!
