The American Express Premier Rewards Gold card has received a fairly significant upgrade for cardmembers as of June 1. Some of the new perks include 2X spending at U.S. restaurants and no foreign transaction fees.

But, the biggest new deal is that the card now comes with $100 per calendar year in statement credits for airlines. This is very similar to the airline fee credit that is offered with the Amex Platinum card except it is $100 less than the Platinum card.

Annual Airline Fee Credit

That perk is great since it gives you the opportunity to offset $100 of the annual fee (which is $195 but waived the first year) and actually get quite a bit ahead of the fee itself. Since the annual fee is waived the first year, you will come out $100 ahead and get another $100 in an airline fee credit as of January 1 – before you have ever paid an annual fee!

50,000 Sign-Up Bonus

Something that makes this card better and worth even more is that it comes with a sign-up bonus of 50,000 Membership Reward points for only spending $1,000 in the first 3 months. That is a very decent bonus and much better than the “public” offer of 25,000 points.

The reason I say “public” is that the 50,000 point offer uses the same link except you may need to open it in a private browser session and try a few times to get the offer to come up. Here are the details from when I wrote about this offer back in April:

Card Details:

  • Earn More: earn 50K Membership Rewards® points after you spend $1K during your first three months of Card membership
  • Earn Fast: 3X points for flights booked with airlines, 2X points at US gas stations and US supermarkets, 1X points on other purchases.
  • $0 introductory annual fee for the first year, then $195

Special Bonus Offer

What is available is 50,000 Membership Reward points after spending $1,000 in 3 months! That is a very low spending threshold for a premium card like this, but very welcome! The language of the offer says that it is a “Special Offer for You.” I tried this on multiple computers and devices and still received the offer so it may just be language for a limited time offering of some kind.

Finding the Offer

If you already have logged into American Express from the computer you apply from, it may not show you the offer. This has been a bug in Amex’s systems for a while. It is kind of stupid as it prevents you from seeing an offer that you are likely eligible for just because it can tell from tracking cookies that you have an Amex account. The problem is that anyone could have logged in to that computer – not just you. So, you are prevented from seeing the better offer (or an offer at all) because Amex can tell there is an Amex account holder that uses that computer.

To see the offer, if that is indeed the case with you, make sure you open this link in a private browser session. That should bring up the offer. The link is the standard Premier Rewards Gold link and that is the one that I have included here.

Should You Get This?

Here is the problem – you can only get this card and the sign-up bonus once in a lifetime under the current Amex rules for personal cards. That means you absolutely should not be signing up for a 25,000 point offer! That will lose you a lot of points – at least 25,000 from this offer.

But, this card has had an offer out before of 75,000 points. Should you wait for that? There are targeted offers that come out at that amount so you could wait. But, if you want to get the card, you can easily still get a lot of offer from the 50,000 points if you go with this one. At the very least, you can get double the regular 25,000 points.

  • Charlie, I’ve seen this before w/ the google incognito window; however my question to you is this. I currently have the Amex Platinum, would I be able to get the MR points from the PRG to go into that MR account?

    • Did you ever figure out if you can transfer your Amex plat points to this card?

      • If you have any card in the Membership Rewards family and the cards are registered to the same account, the points are all pooled.

  • Charline, do you know if Amex ever honors a higher bonus if one signed for lower one? I know Chase and some other banks (sometimes) do this. Thanks.

  • Thanks Charlie! And thanks Mike!! I tried and tried browsers, etc and nothing worked. Then I tried the incognito window and it worked! Approved for 50K, $1K/3 months. So excited. I didn’t want to wait for the 75K offer bc the spend is usually big and small spends are easier for my income level. I’ll use these for an Aeroplan one-way from Europe this October.

  • OMG!!!! I got approved!!!

In your face, Chase Sapphire Preferred! Amex approved me.

  • I got approved, but it took like three plus minutes before the approval page showed up. I was about to lose hope.

  • thank you. i got approved using your link.
would have been better had you gotten compensation for it.
