Buy $500 Gift Cards At OfficeMax/Office Depot And Earn Big Points!

Some good news popped up yesterday that OfficeMax stores (and OfficeDepots apparently since they are the same now) have gift cards that you can buy for $500! This is great news if you have a Chase Ink card as they earn 5X Ultimate Reward points per dollar at office supply stores (Chase United and Marriott business cards earn 2 points per dollar there)! You can buy up to 4 at a time ($2,000 limit) and the fee on them is $5.95 each (though there were reports of buying them at a $3.95 fee).

Earn Ultimate Reward Points

Doing the math if using a Chase Ink card means that, for each $500 card, you will pay $505.95. That will earn you 2,529 Ultimate Reward points. That is a cost of .2 cents per point, which is excellent! I personally value my Chase UR points at right around 2 cents each (for transfers to United, Hyatt, and others) so that is like getting $50 in value from these cards! Since you can use these to load prepaid cards and use them for other purchases, it is just like cash with an extra step/slight inconvenience.

Data Points

I am getting this from other people and have not had a chance to do it myself (since there are not OM/OD in Europe!), so check it out for yourself and report in the comments if you find anything different from what I gathered here from others or how many you have been able to find. I would move quickly as there will be people hitting these hard. Just try to leave a few for me sometime! 🙂

Some of the other data points so far is that this works at Office Max, but should be the same at Office Depot. Also, some people were having trouble with the MasterCard versions so you may want to try the Visa gift cards.

For those that cannot find them, you can buy $300 gift cards online at Staples (which I have been doing) and pay $8.95 per card. This will earn you the same 5X UR points on those cards
