Here is your weekly US Passport update! The State Department is chugging along with getting these passports out and they are now almost below 1 million left in line so they have done a pretty good job, especially since there are still some centers closed and they are not yet at Phase Three.
US Passport Processing Update – August 6
Remember, they are processing them a first come/first out basis. To understand how the whole passport processing is accomplished (as well as where your passport is sent), check out this post for a cool infographic to break it all down.
Here is how the State Department did in the last week, as well as the two previous weeks:
Week (Thursday-Wednesday) | Applications Received | Passports Awaiting Issuance* | Passports Issued |
---|---|---|---|
This Week (July 30-Aug 5) | 139,000 | 1.06 million | 213,000 |
Last Week (July 23-July 29) | 143,000 | 1.15 million | 206,000 |
2 Weeks Ago (July 16-July 22) | 143,000 | 1.23 million | 198,000 |
This is a great series of numbers for a few reasons – one is that the 213,000 passports issued is one of their highest numbers in a week so far (since reopening). Another is that they did not have to receive quite as many new applications with that number dropping 4,000. Finally, they are now down to just over 60,000 passports left to get under 1 million. They should get there this week.
Now, the State Department has made an effort to let people know that the number of passports awaiting issuance is not abnormal for past years during the busy season. They say this: “In prior years, the average number of passport applications in process during our busy season has routinely exceeded 1 million.”
So, if you have a passport that was sent in, chances are you may not have to wait more than a few weeks before you see your new one coming in the mail!
Sign-up here if you are waiting for your passport and you will be notified when it starts processing and then again when it is sent out to you.
I went into my local post-office in South Florida June 7th to get my first time passport as an adult, and I got an email today that my passport book/card was approved, along with a tracking number. So if you applied June or earlier and are still waiting, hopefully you will hear back soon.
Awesome, Alex, and congrats on the passport! Hopefully you will be able to use it soon! 🙂
