Flight simulators are an awesome piece of technology that allows real pilots to train and, occasionally at some locations, the rest of us get the sensation of what it is like to pilot an aircraft. But, here is an Alternative Flight Simulator that instead – puts you in economy.
The Alternative Flight Simulator Simulates Sitting in Economy
The Alternative Flight Simulator was designed and built by Alex Shakespeare, an IT consultant. Thanks to his interest in aircraft and his knowledge of electronics, he was able to construct an aircraft simulator in his house. He has a row of 3 economy seats and a “window” that is actually a display that shows landings at various airports.
It also has a passenger panel for the fan and flight attendant call button. This call button is linked to his Google Assistant so it goes throughout the house.
The video monitor and florescent light strip are powered by Raspberry PI Zero and drives the video and light portion of the experience.
As a geek, I love the setup. As a traveler, I cannot imagine wanting to simulate sitting in economy at home! But, from an Avgeek perspective, this is also kind of cool to be able to sit in the context of a plane while observing the landing scenes from around the world. So, check it out!
