The 2020 Frankfurt Marathon is now canceled. Here are some of the details from it as well as a video from the organizers explaining why cancellation was necessary.

Yesterday, I wrote how the London Marathon was canceled as of last week and, just now, the 2020 Frankfurt Marathon announced they are canceling this year’s events as well.

The 2020 Frankfurt Marathon is Canceled

This was a race that was to have taken place in late October, October 25. They were actually seeing record numbers of registrants as other marathon events had canceled and runners were looking for a place to run.

But, with the uncertainty surrounding covid-19, the organizers had to finally call it. This cancellation comes 10.5 weeks before the race would have been held. This is good news for the thousands of runners who had started training but had not gotten too deep into it before the race was called.

The race directors had hoped to be able to still hold the event even with the regulations put forth by the State of Hessen regarding major events taking place prior to October 31. But, they realized it was just not possible. As a result, the organizers are already looking forward to next year when the 39th running of the Frankfurt Marathon will take place on October 31, 2021.

In a different touch, the organizers filmed a YouTube video by all the staff to make it more personal. Here is that video.

I think the video did a great of explaining why the marathon could not take place, including the limit that would have prevented runners from overtaking each other during the race!

However, refunds will not be offered but they are instead offering a “voucher option” which was detailed in the e-mailed to the participants. I believe this is likely why they did a video with all the staff present to make the human element visible as they are not offering a refund.
