Well, Qantas gives out iPads for use while on their Boeing 767s. 🙂 Other airlines have done something similar in recent months, giving out tablets to customers in their premium cabins, as their entertainment sources. Well, Qantas is taking an additional step by distributing them to all passengers on the planes that will be stocked with them. They will, using their Qstreaming service, stream over 200 movies and TV shows to the iPads in flight. These will be present in the seatback of every seat for the passengers upon boarding. It will certainly make long-haul flights, especially with children, be a little easier. To me, the only negative with this is that you normally get to continue using the IFE right up until landing. I would imagine that the iPads will have to be stored away upon descent.
Supposedly, the reason for this whole plane switch to iPads for entertainment units is also to help with fuel costs. The weight difference between the iPads and the IFE (in-flight entertainment) systems has the iPad route weighing about 11% of the traditional weight. That should, over time, help significantly with fuel savings!
Anyway, next time someone is to fly a Qantas 767, you should have this to look forward to!
