Now, Aeroplan is allowing even more time for free award cancellations. This is great news for people booking awards and wanting to see what will happen.

Here is some good news (and something that literally happened while I was cancelling an award myself today) – Aeroplan has extended the period of time for when you can cancel your awards at no fee!

Aeroplan is the frequent flyer program of Air Canada and one of the best choices for Star Alliance premium award bookings. They are a program that has both many things to like and dislike but one that I use many times for awards between the US and Europe.

For a limited time (through June 30), Aeroplan is allowing free award cancellations. This is a great move and one that US airlines have not all publicly acknowledged (though some are doing it on a case-by-case basis).

As of last year, the fee to normally cancel an award ticket with Aeroplan is $75 (CAD) down from the original $125. This is what you would pay if you were to do it online. If you were to do it over the phone, it would cost $150 per ticket (again, CAD).

Now, through June 30, you can cancel your Aeroplan award just by signing in and going to Manage My Bookings. Once there, you will see the little “cancel” button. Go ahead and cancel and you will not pay a fee to do so!

Invalid request error occurred.

This is certainly good news, not just for those with immediate travel awards but also for those who may have rethought some future travel for whatever reason.

If you do need to call in to cancel (like I did for one award), make sure you call right at 7AM EDT to wait less than a minute!
