Airlines are desperate to get passengers onboard their planes and most are offering sales on tickets to do that. But, most are not offering sales on award seats as that does not directly bring the airline the cash flow that they need. Well, Etihad is going that way with offering a 30% sale on award bookings – for hotels, cars, flights, and the reward mall.

Etihad has a special promo for customers to use their miles – save 30% on all kinds of bookings, not just tickets. But, if you do want to start some trip planning, you can book any Guest Seat (Etihad’s saver seats) and get a discount as well.
You have until August 27 to book these awards and can travel up to May 31, 2021 for flights. That gives a nice long look for travel to pick up again and you can save some miles in the process.
A Look at First Apartment Examples
In real numbers, flying between JFK and Abu Dhabi in the beautiful First Apartment costs just 95,000 miles as opposed to the normal cost of 136,000 miles. American Airlines charges 115,000 miles so this is a discount!
Another First Apartment popular route is London and Abu Dhabi. This typically costs 88,000 miles but is now on sale for 61,000 miles! American Airlines charges 62,500 miles so Etihad is just a bit cheaper.
Keep in mind that both American Airlines and Aeroplan are award partners with Etihad. While they may normally be cheaper, this sale puts Etihad in a good place. Plus, if you do want to take advantage of this sale, you can transfer from Marriott (3:1 +5K for every 20K miles transferred), Citi ThankYou, American Express Membership Rewards, and CapitolOne.
Personally, I always would prefer using miles from programs that I can transfer other points into than using a program that makes it harder to earn the miles (like with American Airlines who only has Marriott as a transfer partner). At least now, Etihad is making those awards 30% cheaper.
Bottom Line
This new Etihad award sale is actually a pretty good deal for certain redemptions. If you want to transfer points over from American Express, CapitalOne, or Citi, you have until August 27 to get these booked!
But, remember that The Residence is not included in this sale since it only works for GuestSeat (saver) seats and The Residence is not available in GuestSeat fares.
[…] H/T: Running with Miles […]
Great information Charlie. If things go south and you can’t fly, any idea what the expiration is for Etihad miles?
Thanks, Christian. They expire after 18 months of no activity.
