The left watch has a charging icon on its screen, the middle watch displays a topographic map, and the right watch shows a menu with options like "Kayak," "Apnea," "Dive," "Snorkel," and "Surf." The watches have different band colors: white, black, and yellow. The background features a rocky surface and a scenic view of a lake with hills.

Which Garmin GPS Watch to Choose?

With so many sales, which Garmin GPS watch do you buy? Here is a quick primer on the different product lines so you know what each of them provide.

Forerunner

The Garmin Forerunner series is lightweight and feature-rich that are built for runners with a lot of different features, more as you climb the series. The Forerunner 165 is their basic running watch and sports an AMOLED display and good battery life with all the things you would want in a basic running watch. Going up from there, you can go to the Forerunner 265 which is actually a nice watch still even though it has kind of been replaced with the Forerunner 570. It is an even better deal than the 265 for sure.

If you want the mid-advanced, you go for the Forerunner 570 with the Forerunner 965 being an awesome watch as the previous top Forerunner and still very good – and on sale. The Forerunner 970 is the current top tier Forerunner and is basically like a Fenix with lighter weight materials and less ruggedness (and is not currently on sale). It also has shorter battery life than the Fenix watches.

Instinct

The Instinct series is kind of like the G-Shock of the Garmin lineup. It is rugged like the Fenix lineup but cheaper and made with cheaper materials. They are very dependable and have decent battery life, particularly if you get solar equipped version.

Venu/Vivoactive

While they are different lines, these are the lifestyle Garmin GPS watches. If you want something that looks more “fancy” and still functional while adapting to an active lifestyle, these are the watches for you. There are some great options in here, including the Venu X1 if you want the largest Garmin display ever (I had owned it but wasn’t impressed with the look – if you love the Apple Watch Ultra, you would prefer this over the other Garmin watches).

Fenix

The Fenix line is the best watches in the Garmin lineup (other than the MARQ which are outside of most buyers’ budgets) – best materials, most rugged, most features, best battery life (we will include the Enduro 3 here also). Also including the Epix 2 and Epix Pro since they are built on the Fenix line and were the AMOLED versions of the Fenix 7.

I currently have the Garmin Tactix 8 which is the tactical version of the Fenix, so basically the same with a slightly different design and couple of extra features. I have owned a lot of Garmin watches but the Fenix watches are always my favorite. Keep this in mind – you will always want to buy the Sapphire edition of any of these as the material is better and they normally have a couple more features than the stainless steel version – unless the price difference is like $200 or something.

With the return policy for Amazon good for returns up through January 31, 2026, you have plenty of time to see how your new watch works for you.
