What Should You Do?

The Delta Gold cards typically hit the 50,000 mark once or twice a year so this is nothing new. But, the Delta Platinum cards have the bigger and better 70,000 mile offer this time. Yes, you will need to pay the annual fee of $195 up front but if you value your elite miles at all, this is the way to go.

If I did not already have both cards, I would likely apply for both the Delta Personal Platinum and the Delta Business Platinum. It would require a total of $8,000 in spending in 3 months but you would receive a total of 140,000 Delta Skymiles plus 20,000 elite miles. It only takes 25,000 elite miles in a year to hit Delta Silver (keep in mind you need to fulfill Delta spending requirements or spend $25K on a card in a calendar year to waive that requirement) so you could get it with a little flying! Also, you would spend $390 in annual fees for these cards. Finally, you will get $200 in credit on your first Delta purchases (this is total for both cards)

If you go for the Delta Platinum cards to get elite status from scratch, I would advise not hitting the minimum spending amounts until after January 1 to make sure that you get the elite miles for 2017. To do this, try to hold off applying until late in October to make it easier.

If you just want the Skymiles, go for the two Delta Gold cards. It will be $0 in annual fees the first year and you will get 100,000 Delta Skymiles after spending $4,000 in 3 months.
