Per Frequent Miler (and the terms of this offer) gift cards do count for mileage earning! This means that you could buy a Sears gift – earn the 9 miles per dollar – and then go back through the United portal to buy what you actually want – and earn another 9 miles per dollar. That adds up to 18 miles per dollar which turns it into a great deal! Make sure you are purchasing e-gift cards and that you may need to call to verify the purchase for fraud prevention.
In addition, they also have a promo where you will earn 1,000 United miles for $250 in spending. That is a lot of spending, but if you go through with the gift card purchases for $250 (and then use those to buy another $250 in merchandise), you will end up with 5,500 United miles. Not fantastic, but really a nice haul for a little time.
I only see a 6x and not a 9x on united mileage shopping.
