This SPG auction just went for almost 1 million Starpoints! What could you do with 1 million Starpoints?

SPG Moments are a great way to get extreme value from your Starpoints while getting some things you may not actually be able to buy through regular opportunities. In fact, there are even some offers that may not interest you for the headline item but the hotel might be a good deal. But, this has to be one of the most extreme Moments auctions yet as far as the closing price!

This SPG Auction Went for Almost 1 MILLION Starpoints!

1 million starpoints

There were a few different Monaco F1 packages available, but this was definitely the high end one. I knew it was going to go high and spotted it again yesterday for around 400,000 Starpoints. As I was curious to see the final value, I visited it again after closing and was shocked to see it had gone for 920,000 Starpoints, almost 1 million Starpoints!

Here is what the package included:

  • Access for two (2) to the VIP hospitality on the MERCEDES AMG-PETRONAS Yacht during the 2016 Formula One™ Grand Prix de Monaco Qualifying day on Saturday 28th May 2016 including a Buffet-Style meal and open bar.
  • Access for two (2) to the Mercedes AMG PETRONAS VIP Penthouse apartment in the Shangri-La building, on Sunday 29th of May; race viewing from the balcony and roof terrace over the Circuit de Monaco including Gourmet catering and full open bar
  • Three (3) nights stay (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) at Le Méridien Beach Plaza in Monte Carlo for two (2), including breakfast and internet.
  • Two (2) VIP Gifts from MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS

It is really hard to put a cash value on this auction since some of the items do not have regular listings. But, going by the downgraded versions of some of these line items, it appears that the package would cost no less than $12,000. But, that amount is for the cheaper, listed parts of the package. Things like the Penthouse apartment were not something I found.

I love that the 3 night stay at the Le Méridien hotel part of it included internet – and that they actually thought to stipulate that in the auction details. 🙂

With the value of about 2 cents per Starpoint, that puts this package around a value of over $18,000. That is a lot of Starpoints! Consider that you could book 13 Nights & Flights packages (which each include 5 nights at a Category 4 and 50,000 airline miles), or you could convert the points to 1,150,000 airline miles and you can see that this had better be one incredible weekend! 🙂

Or, think about this – if you went for this with just churning the Amex SPG cards (which you cannot do), it would only take you 36 SPG Amex card bonuses to get this many points. 🙂

  • You’re probably not an F1 fan, nor aware of the continued World Championship run that Mercedes F1 is on again. So this package is really something to get (if one is willing to pay for it).

Some F1 fans that I know of would probably have paid more than $18K for that experience.

Not everyone’s cup of tea, but that is a great F1 package at the sport’s most prestigious race of the year.

    • You are right – not a F1 fan but I totally get that this was worth it to all the bidders. Can you tell me what the advantages of this package over some of the other levels for observation are? I am really curious to know about that. Thanks!
