Flying Blue is the new transfer partner of Chase Ultimate Rewards!

Yesterday, the news came out that Flying Blue (the program for KLM and Air France) has joined Chase Ultimate Rewards as a transfer partner. Flying Blue is now the transfer partner of American Express Membership Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards, Citi ThankYou Points, and Starwood Preferred Guest. This makes them equal with Singapore and Virgin Atlantic in being able to transfer points from all these major currencies into their program.

Transfer in 1,000 point increments – instantly!

Chase points transfer instantly which is a huge advantage over something like SPG. You can transfer in 1,000 point increments and you will need to transfer the points from an account that is tied to a Chase Sapphire Preferred, Chase Ink Plus, or the Chase Ink Bold (see this post for unlocking value from the Chase Freedom and Chase Ink Cash).

As a reminder, you can only transfer points to someone in your own household or one of your authorized users.

What Does This Mean?

Promo Awards

The Flying Blue program has some great deals every few months when they release their Flying Blue Promo Awards. These awards are only on airlines in the program but you can get a discount of something like 50% on economy and business class tickets to Europe from North America. Yes, there are some fees and surcharges, but it can still be an incredibly cheap way to redeem for Europe.

Book on Delta

Redeem Flying Blue miles for travel on Delta to Hawaii!

Another nice thing is that you can book Delta awards to Europe without paying surcharges (unlike with Korean Airlines, the other Skyteam partner with Chase Ultimate Rewards).

Flying Blue used to have an advantage over Delta in that you could book one ways on Delta with Flying Blue miles, but now you can do the same with Delta. Still, this is convenient to book domestic awards on Delta using your Chase Ultimate Reward points! Not only that, but there are some good values like 15,000 miles from the mainland US to Hawaii.

Book tickets to Israel from the US for only 25,000 miles each way!

Some Great Redemption Opportunities

  • 25,000 miles one way from the US to Europe (including on Delta which charges 30,000 miles)
  • 15,000 miles one way from the mainland US to Hawaii (on Delta which charges 22,500 miles)
  • Promo awards for as low as 12,500 miles one way to Europe (on Air France and KLM)
  • Domestic awards on Delta (using Ultimate Reward points from these transfers)
  • 25,000 miles one way from the US to Israel (including on Delta since FB considers Israel to be in Europe)

Miles in the Flying Blue program expire every 20 months if you do not credit a flight to your account!

Earning Potential

One of the great things about the Chase Ultimate Reward program is the ease with which you can earn 5X points when you use a Chase Ink card at office supply stores. Since you can buy gift cards there to use pretty much anywhere, it makes it incredibly easy to generate a lot of Ultimate Reward points This makes this a great deal for the new transfer partner of Chase Ultimate Rewards!

Running Awards

Flying Blue is the only travel rewards program that actually lets you use your miles to redeem for running races! Check out this post for more information. Now, you have a way to use your Chase Ultimate Rewards to redeem for marathons, even sold-out races!

Summary

I used to book several flights with Flying Blue but it has been a while for me. It is nice to have Flying Blue as a Chase Ultimate Rewards transfer partner since I do most of my earning there. Besides, having more options is always a good thing!
