The New Grand Hyatt Athens is a Category 3 Award Hotel!

The new Grand Hyatt Athens is due to open next month and it already has some great prices. Now we know the award category of the Grand Hyatt Athens as well and it opens it up to be a great redemption for free certificates, especially during higher priced seasons!

I have written a couple of posts about the new Grand Hyatt Athens that is due to open next month (I will be there shortly after the opening so will have a full review then if not before the opening). I have had a lot of questions about the Grand Hyatt Athens and what award category it will be.

The Grand Hyatt Athens is a Category 3 Award Hotel

Well, we now have the answer! It will debut as a Category 3 hotel. That is much better than I thought, figuring it would likely be something like a Category 4.

This is a great deal for award hotels in Athens when hotels from other chains come in at higher category points (the Hilton costs 50,000 points per night and the two big SPG hotels are Category 6 properties). While cash prices are low around the opening, they do climb quite a bit during the winter months and will likely be higher next year. As a result, getting it for a Category 3 price is a great deal.

What Will It Cost in Points?

This means that the Grand Hyatt Athens will cost 12,000 points per night or 6,000 points and $75. But, one of the best parts is that you can redeem your anniversary nights against a free stay since it is a Category 3. You can also use your free nights from hitting 30 nights in a year and from the 5 brand achievement.

…But, Not Yet

Unfortunately, the Grand Hyatt Athens is not taking point reservations yet but I believe that is just due to figuring out initial demand. The Park Hyatt Mallorca did that initially as well (they offered full point redemptions but not Points+Cash redemptions). I will update when they start accepting points for reservations.

  • Charlie, very eager to read your stuff from Athens and regarding this property. Cat 3 is very good deal.
A few have mentioned that this property is not that convenient to many sites. Anxious to hear about that as well.

  • For me the 3 most important items in any hotel is Location,Location,Location and the GH fails all 3. I will continue staying with SPG at the King George or Grande Bretagne, which besides great hotels have the absolute best location. Even the Hilton is sort of out of the way walking wise.

    • I live 10 months out of the year in Athens and agree with Isaac above -it is like visiting NYC and staying in Brooklyn —

    • Location is pretty important to me as well and the location fo the Grand Hyatt is a surprise to me in that regard. However, it could depend for people that are Hyatt loyalists. If you have 4 people and a suite upgrade, going with the Hyatt option would be a better choice and a cost saver (over something like SPG properties) – that is, unless you are ok with AirBnBs!
