Southwest announced today their new changes for the Southwest Companion Pass in 2020 and there has already been some blowback about the extra 15,000 points it will take to hit it. Fortunately, there are several ways to earn points that will count for the Companion Pass! Here is one way that many people may not know about!
Use Referrals to Help Hit the Southwest Companion Pass!
Of course, the easiest way to earn the points for the Southwest Companion Pass is through the credit card bonuses on the Southwest credit cards. When the offers are at 50,000 points – 60,000 points (and even 80,000 points with the business card), it only takes 2 cards and some spending to reach the 110,000 (soon to be 125,000 points in 2020)points necessary for the Southwest Companion Pass. But, with the Chase use of the 5/24 rule, many people have a difficult time getting these cards (again).
The points for the Southwest Companion Pass can also be accrued by spending on those cards but that takes $110,000 of spending in a calendar year (125,000 points starting in 2020), difficult for many people. Also, you can get these points by flying but not many of the people that read the blogs do it that way! 🙂

I wrote about this a while ago but with the latest change by Southwest, I thought it was worth repeating. Referral points earned through referring customers for the Southwest credit cards do count towards the Southwest Companion Pass!
Referral points count towards the Southwest Companion Pass
The rules for Southwest referrals is that you can earn up to 50,000 points in a calendar year through referrals. You will earn 10,000 points per successful referral. So, if you can get 5 people to sign up for the Southwest credit cards through your referral link, you will get almost half of the points needed for the Southwest Companion Pass!
You can leave your referral links in the comments section below to earn more points – hopefully that helps! In the meantime, at least we are still able to earn these points that count towards the Companion Pass!
Just know this – often the referral offers are lower than the public offers! So, do your friends a favor can compare the offers before sending them a link!
How long does it take for a referral to hit? When should a referral be done so that it won’t until after the new year?
Chase referrals post within a couple/few days after the statement closes. So you should be good sending referral offers after your last statement of 2019 closes (so, say that is December 15 – anything after that should post around January 19)
