You have to hand it to Southwest – they have found some creative ways to help people get back in the air, courtesy of the much-loved Companion Pass. For those not familiar with it, the Southwest Companion Pass lets you select someone that you want to take along with you – on any Southwest flight – and all that needs to be paid for that friend/family member is the taxes and fees! No points or ticket cost for that companion!

This has long been something people worked hard to get but with the travel slowdown over the last year, not as many people are flying as before. Still, Southwest is trying to give those that will travel this year a chance to get the taste of the Companion Pass in the easiest way possible – one new Southwest credit card.

As with the normal offers, you cannot get a personal Southwest credit card if you have one or have a bonus on any Southwest personal card in the last 24 months. But, if you have not, time to apply!

Here is what you need to know:

  • Spend $5,000 in 3 months to earn the Companion Pass and 30,000 points (worth about $450 in Southwest travel)
  • The Southwest Companion Pass will last from when you earn it until February 28, 2022
  • The annual fee varies for the cards, $69, $99, or $149 and is on the first statement (and does not apply for the spending requirement

You can pick the Southwest Plus card, the Premier card, or the Priority card.

Should You Apply?

Here is the tough part – do you foresee yourself traveling at least a handful of times, on Southwest, in the next year? Remember, you do not earn the Companion Pass until you have met the $5,000 in spending so calculate the time it will take to do that as well. If you are not going to fly Southwest much in the next year, it would be a waste of a Southwest credit card to do this now. Better off to wait until you know you will be doing travel.

But, if you know you will travel or already have some travel booked, this is a great deal to bring someone along with you!
