There is a new luxury hotel coming – in space! The newly announced Aurora Station is due to take off in 2021 and people can start making reservations right now for a 12 day space experience.

From the time I was a little boy, I wanted to go to space. I had thought about it semi-seriously at one point but never pursued it. Still, I knew the time would come that people would be able to regularly go into space without having to be aerospace experts and thought maybe I could swing it then. 🙂

Over the last many years, space has been chased by individuals and corporations as it is still the final frontier for the non-government entities. While it will be a long time before the everyday person can afford space tourism, the first luxury hotel in space is now taking reservations and deposits, so that is one step!

Here is what Orion Span says about this first luxury hotel in space:

“Aurora Station will be the World’s First Luxury Space Hotel in orbit 200 miles above the Earth’s surface. Our luxurious accommodations will include private suites for two, the most number of windows ever created for spaceflight, weightlessness, and the world’s only authentic astronaut experience. We launch in 2021.”

Orion Span announced this yesterday that they plan to launch their new Aurora Station in late 2021 have it going as a community for space tourists, astronauts, research, and manufacturing. The cost to stay in this luxury hotel in space? It will set you back $9.5 million for a 12 day stay. While a huge price tag, it goes to show how space is becoming more “affordable” since flights aboard Russian spacecraft to the space station (as tourists) a few years ago was costing people upwards of $40 million!

As of the announcement yesterday, you can put your deposit of $80,000 down for a reservation aboard Aurora Station. 🙂 For the full price, you will get several months of training for your 12 day journey. Orion Space says that their Aurora Station (which will orbit 200 miles above Earth) will start at 43.5 feet by 14 feet and will carry 4 customers and 2 crewmembers. It will be added on to over time with the goal of eventually offering space condos!

Yes, there are still unknowns (like who and what they will be using to get their customers into the station) but I will be eagerly watching this development over the next few years to see what they come up with.
