I love different approaches to marketing and I think Icelandair has done a really good job with this one. They are actively seeking “bad photographers” for this new advertising campaign and it really sounds like a cool idea. Let’s see if you would fit what they are looking for!
Airline Wants to Hire a Bad Photographer for $50,000 and All Expenses Paid to Iceland

Here is the campaign’s premise – “We want to prove that even the worst photographer can take great photos of Iceland. Is that you?”
If they select you, here is what you will receive:
- Approximately 10-day planned trip in Iceland
- Travel expenses covered
- US$50,000 for your photographs, content, and participation (in addition to travel expenses) — see terms and conditions for full details.
- Your photos will appear in a global campaign, and may appear in other publications and exhibitions
- Possible worldwide recognition
It’s an interesting take – find someone who takes bad pictures and Icelandair will use that to show that Iceland is still incredible DESPITE bad photography. Having been to Iceland, I can say it is a truly beautiful country and I went there early in my photo taking days and I still think the pictures ended up pretty good. 🙂 So, I am in agreement with that!
Here are the questions they are asking (multiple choice):
How would you describe your photography skills?
Compared to your friends, your photos are usually:
How would you rate your English skills?
How do people usually react to your photos? (with emojis for answers)
If something fun happens on a trip, what are you most likely to do?
How comfortable are you with being in front of a camera (for a video or photo)?
After answering these, you have the option of uploading a max 60-second video to explain why your “lack of skill” makes you the ideal candidate.
Here’s the thing – I think most people that share photos online probably do not consider themselves a “bad” photographer. I mean, I still have plenty of room to grow as a photographer but I think am definitely better than bad! But, here is a post from 12 years ago in Iceland and you can see that I have some pretty bad photographs of Iceland!

I do have a couple of people in mind that I may encourage to apply for this, though. I just have to hope they take it as a compliment and not an insult! 🙂
