The earthquake yesterday in the Bay Area is the largest quake to strike there in 25 years, hitting 6.0 magnitude. 87 people were injured and much damage was done. Obviously, my thoughts and prayers are with the people affected by this earthquake.

An interesting post about it that caught my eye, however, involved the Jawbone UP device and how its users reacted to the quake. The earthquake took place at 3:20AM and the graphic below shows how many of the residents in the various cities around the quake woke up when the quake hit. For those who don’t know, the Jawbone UP is a device that tracks, among other health metrics, your sleep patterns. According to Jawbone, 93% of the thousands of Jawbone UP users in the cities of Napa, Sonoma, Vallejo, and Fairfield (all within 15 miles of the epicenter) woke up when the quake hit. From that point to other cities, it dropped off as the distance increased.

Being someone that enjoys numbers and metrics, I certainly found it interesting to see how many people woke due to the quake and from what distances. To read more about it, check out Jawbone’s blog for the details and source graphic. Again, to any of you who may have been affected by the quake, my hope is for everything to return to normal as quickly as possible.
