Chase has been running promotions for a while to target existing cardholders and encourage them to persuade family and friends to sign up for their products. It is a good marketing tactic since it costs Chase nothing but a few thousand points and the customer that has the card and, most likely, uses it on a regular basis becomes the salesperson to the family and friends. For the cardholder, they are rewarded with bonus points upon successful approval of the new card application.
