Lufthansa First and Business Availability With UA Miles

Lucky wrote yesterday about the tremendous availability that Lufthansa has opened up in first and business class on their new routes of Mexico City – Munich and Toronto – Munich – and it is bookable with United miles!

Normally, Lufthansa releases their first class availability to partners just 15 days before departure (though I was able to ticket Toronto – Frankfurt first class last year 2 months out for 4 tickets!). In this case, they have opened up wide availability and you can book it with United miles. Go read Lucky’s post for all the details. There is still a fair amount of availability this morning so if flying Lufthansa first class next summer was on your wish list, book it up!

This actually would have worked out great for me as we are returning from near Toronto next summer to Europe. The problem is this: 5 tickets in coach one-way = 150,000 United miles, 5 tickets in first one-way = 327,500 United miles! Would it have been fun for all of us to fly first class together to Europe? Sure! Would it have been so much more memorable for my little kids than Lufthansa business was for them last year? No! They are still young, they won’t miss it. In exchange for flying coach, we are able to save enough miles for another trip back to the US – and then some!

Lufthansa is a very special airline with an exceptional hard product. However, if you will miss out on this round of offers and won’t be able to book a Lufthansa first class seat before prices go up, don’t feel too bad! My all-time favorite international first class flight can be had for 57,000 miles one-way (and an extra $120 in surcharges) – Singapore Airlines suites class! 🙂 Either way, enjoy yourself. Whether you fly in first class or in the back of the bus, you will arrive in Europe and still be able to enjoy a fantastic time on the ground!
