Looking For A Great Summer Marathon?

Summer is a really hard time to do a marathon. The heat is a bit extreme so it really messes with people. I did one summer marathon that was incredibly hot. It was God’s Country Marathon where we spent 18 miles running up a ski mountain. The weather was ridiculously hot! It was definitely not my best day!

I am going to put together a destination report next week on the different avenues to get to this one marathon and where to stay, but for now, read my review of the Reykjavik Marathon. You can read it here. It is a fantastic race that takes place in the summer – August 23 this year – and has beautiful weather for that time of year (I was actually wearing a light jacket as I rode around the country). In addition, it has some of the most stunning scenery and natural wonders. I would definitely consider it for this summer if you are looking for a great summer marathon!

Introduction

Reykjavik is the capital of Iceland and is located in the southwest portion of Iceland. It is a city of around 120,000 people (with an overall population of 300,000 in the entire country). The Keflavik International Airport, the air gateway to Iceland is located about 40 miles from Reykjavik. The road between the two is a beautiful route with scenes that will fill you with awe at the sights of nature.

Reykjavik is known to be one of the safest, cleanest cities in the world. Iceland has a 99% literacy rate, as well as many people that speak excellent English. In addition, the people of Iceland are very proud of their Viking heritage and it can be seen throughout the country as subtle reminders of their Viking ancestry. Supposedly, every Icelander can tracer his/her lineage back to the Vikings. Pretty cool! Read more…
