Finally! It has been a long time since we have had a meaningful transfer bonus from American Express and their Membership Rewards program but today marks the start of a good one. They have published a new transfer bonus for transfers to British Airways Avios that allows for a 40% bonus!

From now through January 31, 2015, you will receive a 40% bonus on Membership Reward points that are transferred to your British Airways Avios account. This is not as high as it once was (one promo had a 50% bonus) but it is still good. In fact, it is the first Avios transfer bonus in over a year!

Transferring the Points

To transfer the points, you need to have a Membership Rewards earning card. Login to the Membership Rewards site and select Rewards and then to Transfer Points.

Once it shows the transfer partners, selected British Airways. Once you are in the British Airways transfer window, you will see the banner for the 40% promo.

You can only transfer points in 1,000 Membership Reward increments, so enter the amount of Avios you want in the top box and it will roundup to the nearest amount for an even 1,000 amount. After that, just go ahead and continue with the transfer. If you have not previously linked an account, you will need to link your British Airways account to Membership Rewards. After that, you are all set to transfer away!

Great Deal!

Short-Haul, Roundtrip Flights – Only 6,450 Points

This is really a great deal if you value certain flights. The most powerful are the short-haul domestic flights on American Airlines, US Airways, or Alaska Airlines. For roundtrip flights under 650 miles, it only costs you 9,000 Avios. With this promo, it will only take 6,450 Membership Reward points for a roundtrip flight under 650 miles (it will be rounded up to 7,000 points for transfer)! That is incredible!

Fly Cathay Pacific First Class – 27,000 Points

British Airways

Without a doubt, the best transcontinental product to fly is the fifth freedom flight with Cathay Pacific. They fly from JFK to Vancouver with their fantastic first class cabins (and, of course, the rest of the plane). It costs 37,500 Avios for a one-way ticket on this flight but with this promo, you will only need 27,000 Membership Reward points. That is only 2,000 more points than some domestic airlines charge for their business class domestic tickets! If you want to experience a tremendous international first class experience, this is easily the cheapest way to do it!

    • I actually made that map so I don’t have a direct link to it. I used a map with a radius. I will try to find the link to the radius map. Then, you can just input your cities and the radius.

  • Just signed up for Avios and transferred over 40,000 Membership Reward points into Avios. Showed up immediately in my new Avios account. Painless, took about 5 minutes in total.
