Burning Skymiles: Roundtrip Flight To Morocco For 60,000 Miles

With all the recent news and changes coming from Delta in just the last couple of days, many Delta members are scurrying to book/find awards before anything else happens. To help with that and to get the best bang for your Skymile buck, I thought I would write a couple of posts highlighting some good ways if you plan on burning your Skymiles. Check out yesterday’s post – Burning Skymiles: Getting To Australia For Only 40,000 Miles.

At first glance, you may wonder why this is a good award opportunity. It is a good award ticket thanks to the various airlines and the way they classify geographical boundaries. While many airlines locate Morocco (for the purpose of awards) correctly as part of Africa, Delta classifies Morocco (and other northern African nations) as part of Europe. Confused? 🙂 This actually is very good for anyone that wants to get to Africa for less and Morocco is a great place to head for that African trip. I visited Marrakech a few years ago and it was a pretty good trip – it mixed some European flavor with African and Middle Eastern culture.

United Airlines charges 80,000 miles for a roundtrip to Morocco

Required Miles With Many Airlines From the US to Morocco

  • 40,000 miles one way in coach
  • 70,000 miles one way in business

Required miles With Delta From the US to Morocco

Only 60,000 Skymiles for roundtrip travel to Morocco!

So, for a roundtrip coach ticket, you would save 20,000 miles by using Delta instead of other airlines like United or American Airlines. For business class, you would save 15,000 miles round trip vs United while it would cost 25,000 miles more to use American miles for business.

Booking Travel To Morocco

This is as simple as it gets – just select your departure city in the US and select Casablanca (CMN) or Rabat (RBA) as your destination. There are very few days that even show flights to Marrakech (RAK) so I would not count on that.

To search for the most dates available, select Flexible Dates in your search and set that to 5 Weeks to see all the various options. I was able to see quite a bit of availability throughout the year so you should have no problem securing flights to Morocco (more availability to Casablanca than Rabat).

Business class availability (125,000 miles roundtrip) is also very good and plentiful. While stopovers on awards are no longer allowed, there are several layovers that are either all day or overnight so it still gives you an opportunity to explore your layover city enroute to Morocco.

Summary

Morocoo was a really interesting country and we enjoyed our few days there. That you can get there for only 60,000 Skymiles is a great deal and one that beats the other airlines’ awards. If you are looking for different ways for burning Skymiles, this would provide a different and cheap way to get another country in while getting great value from your Skymiles.

  • I’ve done a fair bit of searching trying to use my Pesos for RAK. I’ll settle for CMN.
Did the Delta site route you on Delta metal via Madrid or KLM via AMS? And was JFK the only option that showed Saver level awards?

    • I tried major airports in the US but JFK did show the best availability (though others had space as well). The most popular routing that I had seen was through CDG. I did see a couple through FCO but not much through Madrid. Of course, that is probably because I did not look at all of the dates because Madrid would make the most sense for availability.
