One of the most popular ways of earning 5X Chase points has come to an end as gift card purchases through PayPal are no longer working for most Chase cards.

A couple of weeks ago, I had heard from some Chase sources that they were going to be cutting the 5X earning on gift cards from PayPal Digital Gifts.

No More Chase 5X Points with PayPal Digital Gifts

Well, as of this past Monday, October 17, gift cards purchased from PayPal Digital Gifts with Chase Ink Plus are no longer earning 5X points (and no more 3X with Chase Ink Preferred).

Different Merchant Category

These purchases coding as 5X purchases was definitely not what Chase had intended and Chase had actually said (very recently) that those purchases took place in a different merchant category than the bonus categories they advertise and that those purchases should not be earning the 5X bonus.

This has been going on for several years now so I am not sure what Chase had been waiting for, especially since it was quite clear to them on their side who the vendor is. But, for whatever reason, they decided this past Monday that they were done awarding 5X points on those purchases.

I heard from some readers and there are a lot more data points over on this Reddit thread about this situation.

What Still Works?

Apparently, the Chase Ink Bold and MasterCard versions are still working so you may want to use those (if you have them) while it lasts. It will likely be shut down as well.

This is a hard one to see go. Of course, you can still use your Chase Ink Plus and Chase Ink Cash to earn 5X points at office supply stores. But, the ease of earning that 5X bonus from your couch on eBay with discounts is over.
